What It Is

North American coral snakes are small, brightly banded elapids related to cobras. Their venom is mainly a neurotoxin that blocks nerve signals to muscles, so bites cause little pain or swelling but can lead to paralysis, including of the breathing muscles, hours later.

Where Pets Come Across It

The eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius) in the south-eastern US, the Texas coral snake, and the Sonoran coral snake in Arizona and New Mexico. They are secretive and usually bite dogs that pick them up or play with them.

Which Animals Are Affected

Dogs most often; cats occasionally.

Published Toxic Dose

No owner-usable dose exists, because the amount of venom injected cannot be known and coral snakes often need to chew to envenomate. Accordingly the calculator gives no risk tier.

Signs and How Soon They Appear

Signs can be delayed by 10 hours or more. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists weakness of all four legs, drooling, fast or shallow breathing, a weak gag reflex, wobbliness, muscle twitching and reduced reflexes. Severe cases progress to paralysis and breathing failure. Merck recommends monitoring bitten animals for at least 48 hours.

What to Do Right Now

Go to a vet immediately, even if there is no visible wound and your pet seems fine; delayed paralysis is the danger. Keep your pet calm and carry small animals. Do not use a tourniquet, cut the wound or try to suck out venom.
